SMM 2026: Methanol Dual Fuel Vessels Enter Mass Delivery Era | Harmony Green Insulation Solutions
Publish Time: 02 September 2026
On September 1, the world's first 325,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel ore carrier "Yuanhai Silu" was named and delivered in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. On the same day, the fifth 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship built by DSIC for CMA CGM began its combined conventional-fuel and methanol sea trials. Coinciding with these milestones, SMM 2026 Hamburg (Sept 1–4) is underway in Germany, with alternative fuels and vessel safety as the show's central themes.
From ore carriers to container ships, methanol dual-fuel vessels are accelerating from pilot projects to mass delivery. The increasing complexity of fuel systems creates new demands for marine insulation and fire protection. Harmony offers a one-stop solution through its full product portfolio: RCFWOOL ceramic wool, AES bio-soluble fiber, marine rock wool, and marine glass wool.
1. Methanol Dual-Fuel Vessels: New Insulation Challenges
Methanol is liquid at ambient temperature and does not require cryogenic storage like LNG. However, it is flammable and highly volatile, imposing special requirements on fire division, pipe insulation, and compartment safety:
- Fuel tanks & bunkering stations: hazardous flammable-liquid zones requiring A60 fire-rated boundaries against engine rooms and accommodation;
- Double-walled fuel supply pipes: ventilation & explosion-proof annulus, with outer-layer fire and thermal insulation;
- Dual-fuel engines & boilers: flexible switching between methanol and fuel oil, with high and fluctuating exhaust temperatures demanding stable high-temperature insulation;
- Ship-wide HVAC: increased fuel-leak detection, ventilation and exhaust ducting, raising demand for thermal and acoustic insulation.
2. Harmony Full-Range Materials, Zone-by-Zone Matching
Harmony provides temperature-graded, function-specific material configurations for different areas of methanol dual-fuel vessels:
| Vessel Area | Condition | Harmony Material | Certification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine exhaust pipes, boiler flues, high-temp piping | Sustained high temp, fluctuating conditions | AES bio-soluble fiber / RCFWOOL ceramic wool | CCS + MED dual certified |
| Double-wall pipe outer layer, valves & flanges | Irregular shapes, flexible wrapping required | AES fiber blanket / RCF ceramic wool blanket | CCS + MED dual certified |
| HVAC ducts, air-conditioning ducts, cabins | Medium-low temp, acoustic damping | Marine glass wool | CCS certified |
| Accommodation, wheelhouse insulation | Thermal comfort | Marine rock wool / glass wool | A1 / CCS |
3. AES Preferred for Ocean-Going Routes with IHM Compliance
For methanol dual-fuel vessels trading to European and US ports, IHM (Inventory of Hazardous Materials) compliance is as critical as fire performance:
- AES bio-soluble fiber: max service temp 1150°C, EU Note Q biopersistence exempt, not classified as carcinogen, no high-risk IHM declaration, CCS+MED dual certified — the first choice for high-temp piping on EU/US routes;
- RCFWOOL ceramic wool: max service temp 1100°C, cost-effective, CCS+MED dual certified, suitable for domestic routes and budget-sensitive projects (IHM declaration required);
- Marine rock wool & glass wool: standard safe materials with no IHM compliance risk.
4. Complete Certification, Survey-Ready
Harmony marine insulation materials carry full class society certification:
- RCFWOOL ceramic wool & AES bio-soluble fiber: CCS Type Approval + MED Wheel-Mark, suitable for A60/H60 fire-rated assemblies;
- Marine glass wool: CCS Type Approval;
- Marine rock wool: A1 non-combustible inorganic material.
All products are supplied with Material Declarations (MD) and Supplier Declarations (SDoc) to assist shipyards in IHM compilation and ensure smooth delivery-stage surveys.
The green ship transition has moved from concept to series production, and the mass delivery of methanol dual-fuel vessels is only the beginning. Ammonia, hydrogen and other new fuel types will follow, raising the bar for temperature resistance, environmental performance and regulatory compliance of insulation materials. Harmony will continue to refine its full-range product portfolio and certification system to deliver safe, compliant and efficient insulation solutions for green shipping worldwide.
